RAPID ACTION LAB - STUDIO 2

 "How can we work together to address priority needs for children aged 0-5 in Oxford?"

 
 

Studio 2 of the Oxford Early Years Rapid Action Lab brought the lab team back together for a day to reflect on their learning from Action Cycle 2 (July 10th - August 6th) and support each action team to develop the next iteration of their prototype to be tested in the field during Action Cycle 3 (August 7th - September 5th).

FLOW OF THE DAY

 

09:00 - Arrival & Registration: Meet the Lab Team.

09:30 - Welcome & Check-in

The day began with an overview of the agenda and an introduction to the guests - Steve Laurence, Community Coordinator for City Children's Centres and Naomi Eisenstadt. Afterwards the Lab Team were invited to check-in around the following questions:

  • How am I arriving?
  • Why am I involved in this lab?
  • What is you intention for the day?

10:00 - Introduction to Action Learning & IDEO Framework

10:10 - Action Learning

The teams used the IDEO Framework to assess their ideas and assumptions they may have, and to come up with a list of actions that will enable them to test their assumptions.

The guests provided input, questions and feedback  on the teams' ideas

Closing reflection from Naomi Eisenstadt on the Oxford Early Years Rapid Action Lab and a few words of wisdom from her vast experience of working in the early years space from the grassroots to advising the UK Governments cabinet office.

Oxford Natural Education Support (OXNEST)

Focus: (1) Community resilience (2) keeping families together (3) preventing families getting to crisis 

Hypothesis: Supporting positive parenting creates a vital ecosystem to meet priority needs for children aged 0-5.

Description: OXNEST aims at providing high quality, affordable  and accessible  training, support and events for people who work with or support children and families in Oxford.

    Joining the tots

    Focus: curating information  

    Hypothesis: families in need of services will benefit from simple information access tools, such as a physical service map.

    Description: An initiative will create a set of simple information access tools and a network of ‘Community Navigators’, to support the priority needs of ‘invisible’ 0-5 years Children and their families in the Florence Park area.

      IN THE LOOP

      Focus: volunteer training 

      Hypothesis: Increasing the number and quality of volunteers in the sector will help children with priority needs

      Description: Empowering parents to empower families - training and support programme for parents wanting to support families with 0-5's.

        Little Ones Learning at Home (LOLAH)

        Focus: language development, home learning environment

        Hypothesis: Providing families with a “doorway” to literary experiences will help language development and impact the home learning environment

        Description: A library-based initiative encouraging parents / carers & children to use the home learning environment to support social, emotional and language development.

          Oxplorers

          Focus: Connecting Existing Early Years Space

          Hypothesis: Enabling access to multiple types of existing early years spaces will help children with priority needs.

          Description: This initiative focus on developing better use of spaces to deliver early years services and generate income with the sector.  Using food, arts & crafts, storytelling, etc. to build stronger communities and better opportunities for the young and their families.
